Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
