The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
